It Finally Happened!

I can hardly believe it!! After 3 1/2 years of applying to the local nursing program I finally got in!! I begin nursing school on January 17th! I have waited almost 4 years to get in and it is still hard for me to believe it's finally going to happen. Two years from today I will be an official RN working in labor and delivery! Best part is, my clinical instructor for the frist semester is my boss here at the hospital. She is so nice and easy to get along with. I am excited in so many ways I can't begin to express it! YAY!!!!!!!!

Project #2

It has been some time now since my last post so I figured I had better say something. I have finally moved all my stuff into John's place, but some things are still not in their proper places. John and I still have to clean his old room and make room for my books on his bookshelf, which is basically all that is left. After that just another round of vacuuming and some more cleaning and we are good to go.

When I decided we needed to paint the bedroom (hee hee, notice I said when "I" decided "we" needed to) it turned into quite an undertaking but it was much easier than my second undertaking. I decided I hated the pattern on our dining room chairs and wanted to re-upholster them to something I liked a little better. I went to pick out the pattern and that turned into being more difficult than I had imagined it to be. I had to get the right kind of fabric and they only had grandma patterns in the fabric type I needed, so I had to settle on one I liked best. It has some grapes and some fruit and vines....kinda wine country.....so, I thought it would work. My mom and dad have been so generous and helpful throughout this move, and like so many other things, they bought the fabric for the chairs. I brought the fabric home to show John, and boy, his face was so hysterical. He HATED the pattern. He could not hide his look of disgust if he tried. Since John is who he is though, I have since put the pattern on 1 and 1/2 out of the 6 chairs. It has turned into a nightmare of a project. The seat bottom is easy, but the backs of the chairs are not easy and I can't do the corners very well, so the corners are too thick and won't fit back chair. I have since stalled on finishing the project and promise I will get back to it soon.

The best part of the story, however, was my first attempt at using a staple gun. Now, contrary to what it may seem, I have never done any kind of painting or re-upholstering in my life. These are all new skills I am learning to perfect. The first time I used the staple gun, I did not know which way the staples came out and stapled the wrong way. Luckily, the staple missed my face and flew up into the air behind me, and we have yet to find the missing staple. John was so mad at me he didn't talk to me for almost 15 minutes!! That is the longest he has ever gone without saying something to me. Finally, he asked me, "How in the hell did you face the staple gun in the wrong direction? You are not stupid, but that had to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen!". By this point, I was in hysterics about the whole thing, and I still have no idea why I faced it the wrong way. Oh well, guess it was just a blonde moment!

Sadly, John leaves for Chicago on Sunday for work and will be gone all week, but at least I'll have time to hopefully get around to cleaning up his room and getting that all done. Note to John, if there is anything you do not want me to find, then you better hide it between now and Sunday :)

For now, I think that is all I have to report. Oh yeah, I get to go see Barenaked Ladies tomorrow night in SF. I am excited about that. We also get to go get a Christmas tree this weekend before he leaves. I can hardly wiat for both of those events! So. Exciting.

Sound Advice

So, the big move went well. We finally finished painting the bedroom, and I must say, I am pretty happy with the outcome. It is actually a lot of work to paint a room. First, you have to tape everything, and then do a couple of coats, and since I wanted to colorwash the wall, we had to do three coats over a period of 4 days. We have finally finished though and now we can move the last of the furniture in. We do not yet have internet access, so I have been without a computer for almost a week now. It is actually pretty sucky when you don't have a computer with internet access easily available to you. For now, here is some sound advice from my hero, Michael Scott.....

Results Of Measures 85 and 86

I am very happpy Measure 85 did not pass and our daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, mothers and girlfriends can choose to be safe when making a difficult decision. I am sad measure 86 did not pass. I guess the smokers decided they did not want to pay more to smoke their cancer sticks. Well, to them, I will be seeing you regularly in the future when you attempt to save your life with chemo or try to catch your breath as fluid continues to build up in your lungs because the alveoli are shot and can no longer do their job, or when you are fighting for your life from heart disease, aneurysms, bronchitis, emphysema, stroke, and/or severe cases of pneumonia and asthma. But enjoy them now, while you are young and healthy, or to help you stay skinny to impress that cute guy, or relieve that stressful moment because you have not learned to handle stress appropriately, or just because it feels so good when you are drunk or done eating. Now that I have vented a little bit, let me just state that it is the younger people who smoke that make me so mad. They know the effects of smoking, yet still choose to do it. It is just so frustrating to watch, especially when they have kids around them. Don't people understand that they are not just hurting themselves, but their children also? Sadly, our society is just so self absorbed they can't even put their children's needs above their own.

Measures 85 and 86

I am going to attempt to write something about voting today, and my opinions on a couple of the measures. Please know up front, however, I am not a person knowledgable about politics. I actually don't trust policiticans at all and am neither a strong democrat or republican. I like beliefs from both sides and, of course, have my own opinion on every matter. I vote for what I think will benefit the general public the most...specifically, the middle class.

Measure 85 (Waiting period and parental notification before termination of minor's pregnancy)
I know this is a huge debate for religious people/non-religious people as to when the baby becomes a baby, but coming from a strictly medical and anatomical point of view please vote NO on this measure. Girls, specifically minors, who do not want to tell their parents they are pregnant, will go to almost all measures to not have their parents find out about the pregnancy. Living in CA, it will be easy for girls to cross the border to Mexico and have an abortion done, or go to some quack "doctor" who does not know what they are doing to have the procedure done. If worse comes to worse they may even attempt to try it themselves, but if you know anything about anatomy, the uterus in most females is tipped and can not be done with a straight object. Chances are if they try it themselves they will puncture the uterus and cause potential harm to themselves including possible death. Please keep our girls safe from these potential horrific outcomes and let them have the right to choose to tell their families or not. Let's hope they have supportive parents who will stand by them in their difficult time.

Measure 86 (Tax on cigarettes...additional $2.60 per pack)
This is a definite yes vote in my opinion. Working in a hospital, I can not tell you how many uninsured people we help and of which, are smokers with many complicatoins from smoking. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking, yet they still choose to do it. The least that can come of it is to support hospitals and anti-smoking groups who have to pay millions upon millions of dollars for these smokers, many of whom are not insured! In the long run, hurt the smokers where it counts right now...in the pocket book. Let them suffer the consequences later in life from smoking, which I can promise you, will not be pleasant for anyone in thier life.

Purple It Is

I have been trying to come up with colors to paint our new bedroom. It is much easier said than done, however. John says he doesn't care, he just doesn't want purple. Using the red duvet as the accent color in the room, all the paint sites I have been visiting tell me the main color of the room should be purple. It looks as though John is going to have to deal with a purple room. Before he reads this though and learns that he will be living in a purple bedroom, let me just state that only one, two at most, of the walls will be purple, but most likely only one. Second, the purple is not a lavender or bright, true purple, it is a muted purple with a gray undertone. Third, I am planning to attempt to use the faux technique of "colorwashing" on the wall so it will not be a solid purple. Lastly, I am not sure if I even want to paint the whole wall or just the bottom third, then put some kind of crown molding up as the divide and paint the rest of the wall the cream color the other walls are going to be. Like I said, it is becoming far more complicated then I thought it would be. The funniest part about this whole thing is that this is just a rented condo. I can only imagine how difficult it is to actually design a whole house that you own.

I Take Pleasure In Other People's Pain

I know I am not the only one to feel this way, but when someone hurts themselves, I can't help but laugh. At first, I try to conceal my laughter, but once I find out they are okay and it's just temporary pain, I can't help but bust up laughing. I used to think there was something wrong with me, but I have since learned that a lot of people laugh at others misfortunes. I know I get laughed at when I hurt myself. I was sent this video via e-mail a little while ago, and it made me laugh the first time I saw it, but I was told to watch it a few times and after about three views I was practically rolling on the floor. Her noises are just too funny.....

Missing My Baby Already

Halloween is now over and I guess it's time to start getting ready for Christmas. Sadly, I always look over Thanksgiving because I don't have to do much to prepare for that holiday. Usually my mom cooks and I just hang out and wait for the food. John wanted us to host Thanksgiving dinner at our "new" place this year, but I have never cooked a turkey or any of the traditional Thanksgiving fixings and I don't have the right dishes to make the dinner. I promised him Thanksgiving will be at our place next year. I took my car in on Monday to get it fixed and they are going to have my baby for two weeks at a reasonable rate of $4678.39 before possible framework damage!! I don't know what I am going to do without my car for two weeks. Stupid me, when I changed insurance companies two months ago, I declined to pay for rental every month because I had never used it in all the years I have been driving. Now, I need it! I suppose that is the way it always works out. So I guess I have to rely on people driving me around, which I HATE more than anything. I get to use one of my parents cars for work and John gets the honors the rest of the time. I guess it's good for him though since he hates my driving anyway.*

*John, "I don't hate your driving, I hate everyone's driving"
*Kristine, "Well, don't I fall under the everyone category?"
*John, "Well, yes, but don't take it personally."
